Morgan S. Gilmer was born in 1846. He was part of Shockley's Escort during the Civil War and was wounded in Lafayette, Georgia, on 24 June 1864. He rejoined his unit on 1 November 1864 and served until the end of the war. He returned to Montgomery, Alabama, and married Helen Barton in 1885. He died in 1916. Gilmer's register of Shockley's Independent Escort Company was published by Woodruff Company, Montgomery, Alabama, in 1905. The unit itself was formed by University o...
